On the Blue Form, you break up your work into major and minor projects. The J-School told me not to include work here on the Blue Form from before I was hired here, then told me I could, then told me not to but to put it in my vita. You can also view my current complete vita as a PDF file or you can visit my online vita.

Here are comments from some of the letters that were sent to the University as support for my major research and creative projects. If you wish to read the entire letter, click on the intro.

  • About the Bronze Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Award, from Mary Lu Abbott, President, Society of American Travel Writers Foundation:

"Judging was done by Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism faculty. In giving Mr. Cuenca a bronze award for 'Raucous Rascals Make Themselves at Home on Monterey Bay,' the judges called the entry 'one of the best examples of storytelling with new media.' In briefly explaining how the work used the multiple abilities of the Web, the judges said, 'These kinds of storytelling techniques, combined with the best writing that travel journalists have to offer, will someday allow the creation of the ultimate travel Web site. And this example might be the one that leads somebody to create it.'"

  • About the Honorable Mention from the '99 AEJMC Web Design Competition, from Dr. Mark Giese, Director of the competition and Assistant Professor, School of Communication, University of Houston:

"Even with the 'winners' and the Honorable Mentions combined these sites still represent only a 25% acceptance rate—significantly lower than many peer-reviewed paper competitions. I urge you to consider this work and this Honorable Mention as an acknowledgment of a significant contribution to our knowledge of this emerging form of mediated communication."

  • About "Where's the Multimedia in Online Journalism", from Judith Axler Turner, Editor, The Journal of Electronic Publishing:

"I know how few people there are who are both knowledgeable about and experienced in e-publishing. I think you are lucky to have one at Kansas, and I urge you to treat him as you would any other academic superstar."

  • About "Where's the Multimedia in Online Journalism", from Tony Sutton, Editor, Design:

"Mr. Cuenca's article was lucid, wonderfully thought-out, well-argued, and an eye-opener in its discussion of the possibilities presented by the merging of new media with mainstream newspapers. I received a number of enthusiastic comments from journalists who are either beginning to work in expanding their newsrooms to include new media or who are wondering where they fit in this brave new world. They were impressed with his grasp on the future and, like me, were enthused by the author's vision of the shape and direction of tomorrow's 'newspaper.'"

  • About "Getting Back Your Clout on the Web", from James R. Gordon, Editor, News Photographer:

"What Prof. Cuenca advocated nearly two years ago forecast a new type of photojournalist, now nicknamed a 'platypus,' necessary because of the ability and capability of providing not only still images but video and sound for the Web as well as television."

  • About "The Practical Manager's Guide to Useful JavaScript Snippets", from Steve Ulfelder, Senior Editor, Computerworld:

"Computerworld is a weekly publication, so I had 51 In Depths per year; I'd estimate that I received more than 500 story pitches per year. I decided to give Mike a try because he appeared to have both technology and writing skill. I'm glad I did; the story was well received and was one of the earliest pieces on JavaScript applications to run in the computer trade press."

  • About Photoshop 5 Exam Cram, from Don Eamon, Project Editor, Coriolis Group:

"I've been an editor for over a decade (and a writer myself for five years before 'jumping the fence'), and I've edited nearly 100 books. Michael is definitely among the top five authors I've encountered."

  • About Photoshop 5 Exam Cram, from Shari Jo Hehr, Acquisitions Editor, Coriolis Group:

"Each chapter of the book underwent intense scrutiny by a highly respected author, reviewer, and instructor, David Xenakis. Had the reviewer raised any serious issues with respect to technical accuracy or completeness of coverage in the manuscript, another reviewer would have been engaged. The entire manuscript was also copy-edited (only a light edit was necessary for this manuscript) to ensure clarity and readability."
