This volume is a study guide for professionals seeking to pass the computerized examination for certification as an Adobe Certified Expert in Adobe Photoshop 5, which is the most widely used professional digital imaging software in the world. Photoshop has become the de facto digital imaging standard for photojournalists and news designers, replacing the traditional photography darkroom.
The ACE certification exam is administered nationwide by Sylvan Prometric. Study programs are available through many training companies, including Dow Jones Training Services.
The focus of the book is to provide working professionals with the information necessary to pass the examination. The examination covers all aspects of the software application. Consequently, the book must cover every tool, option, command, palette, dialog box, preference, and operation of the application. The detail must be complete and comprehensive. The accuracy must be higher than other general computer books.
To write this book, I first took and passed the Adobe Certified Expert examination for Photoshop 5. This was necessary so that I would know how the examination was structured, what types of questions were included, what topics were covered, etc. I was then able to direct the reader to specific subjects and topics, without giving away the answers to the questions.
I then dissected the application from top to bottom. In this book, I describe everything that Photoshop can do and how to do it.
The book was first edited by the project editor, then by a copy editor and a technical editor. The technical editor for this book was David Xenakis, author of Photoshop 5 in Depth.
Along with the presentation of the information in each chapter I wrote a series of practice questions. At the end of the book, I provided a sample test. I wrote these sample questions and the sample test to help the reader effectively comprehend and remember the information that is likely to come up on the test.
According to Adobe Systems, Inc. there are more than 3 million Photoshop users worldwide. This book was the first certification guide ever published for Photoshop and remains one of only two. The other guide is published by Adobe Press, which is the publishing division of the software's publisher.
